I use the word therapy throughout this website to describe both counselling and psychotherapy. While there are differences between them, both offer a confidential space to talk openly about what is happening in your life and explore the things that may be troubling you.
Counselling can help when you are experiencing a particular difficulty, change or period of distress. Having someone who is professionally trained, impartial and able to listen without judgement can give you the space to slow things down, understand what you are feeling and begin to find a way forward.
Psychotherapy can involve exploring things at a deeper level. Rather than focusing only on what is happening now, we may become curious about patterns, relationships and experiences from your past, and how these might continue to influence the way you feel, relate to others or respond to situations today.
In practice, the distinction isn’t always clear-cut. I don’t believe you need to decide whether you need counselling or psychotherapy before you contact me. We will work with whatever you bring, at a pace that feels right for you, and the work can develop naturally as we begin to understand what you need.
